Unit outlines
The unit outline is an important document that needs to be issued to students within the first week of the academic timetable. It provides students with core information about their units of study. The current interpretation by the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Teaching & Learning) of the Code of Conduct for Teaching and Learning (see link below) regarding dissemination of this document to students is that it be issued in hard copy (i.e. printed) form.
The sorts of information that should be included in the unit outline are outlined in the University's Code of Conduct for Teaching and Learning. An overview of the main policy relating to this information can be accessed from the following link: Code of Conduct for Teaching and Learning [PDF].
Information regarding assessment that needs to be provided to students is specifically addressed in the Policy on Assessment Practice and Rule No 2 (formerly 111): Academic Assessment (currently undergoing review, Aug 2009)
Other than mandating the inclusion of certain information, and that this information be provided to students in written (i.e. print-based) form, the University does not set any other requirements as to format, length, etc. However, to assist teaching staff in the preparation of unit outlines, an MS Word-based Unit Outline Proforma is provided. Staff are free to use this, or an alternate format if they wish.
