Description

Please note: This course is about the current MyLO (BlackBoard), not Desire2Learn. More details on D2L training will be announced by the MyLO2012 project team during 2012.

This course takes an introductory, pragmatic approach to using MyLO as part of blended delivery of a unit. This course is not intended to give complete training in the functionality of MyLO; It is recommended that teaching staff also enrol in the communication and assessment sessions to gain a fuller picture of the capabilities of MyLO. The course will be run by CALT staff with support from ITR staff.

Content includes:

  • blended delivery and managing student expectations of a unit's MyLO presence;
  • the MyLO interface (tabs, menus, navigation, toolbar);
  • roles in MyLO (access to tabs);
  • types of resources that can be uploaded;
  • ensuring the usability of resources and interfaces;
  • announcements and page headers;
  • uploading and organising resources (File Manager);
  • organising content (files and links, folders, learning modules);
  • naming links, selective release;
  • MyLO Manager and submitting your QA request (to make the unit available to students);
  • the role of MyLO as a integrating environment (introduction to powerlinks, web links, etc.), and;
  • the potential usefulness of other aspects of MyLO, further training opportunities and resources.

Description

In this course communication, community-building and group work strategies will be discussed with reference to the following MyLO tools:

  • creating groups;
    • tutorial sign-up;
    • collaborative working tools;
  • discussions (forums and blogs);
  • chat, announcements, profiles;
  • mail and calendar.

The need to manage student engagement and expectations will be a strong emphasis of the workshop. Additionally, communication tools outside MyLO such as web conferencing, wikis, Second Life and Google Docs will be mentioned briefly as will further training opportunities.

Designing assessments for unit coordinators and educational designers. This workshop will focus on the design and logistics of assessment tasks using tools including:

  • development of rubrics for online assessment (CRA);
  • designing formative and summative objective assessments (multiple choice testing);
    • question types and creating questions;
    • creating tests and managing settings;
    • quizzes, surveys and self-tests;
    • Respondus (quick overview);
    • importing existing question banks.
  • creating assignments (for electronic submission of documents);
  • Turnitin and academic integrity (brief overview);
  • design considerations for assessable discursive online elements (discussion tools, blogs, wikis), and;
  • designing student self and peer assessment.

Assessment options in MyLO – Part 2

Description

Managing assessments and grades for unit coordinators, tutors and admin staff. This part will focus on what happens after students submit an assessment task in MyLO and is intended for any staff who will be marking online assignments and returning grades to students. Use of the following tools will be the focus of the session:

  • handling submitted assignments (Assignment dropbox);
  • providing feedback online;
  • tracking and managing contributions to discursive assessments;
  • application of rubrics and grading discussions;
  • peer marking and feedback;
  • using the Gradebook, and;
  • returning marks and comments using the MyGrades tool for students.

Description

This is an introductory hands-on session for staff using PebblePad, the University's ePortfolio tool, for teaching and learning. No experience with ePortfolios or PebblePad is required.

By attending this session you will:

  • discuss a variety of learning and teaching outcomes that can be effectively supported by ePortfolios;
  • learn how to access PebblePad and use some of its components to achieve these learning and teaching outcomes;
  • know where you can locate support resources and obtain further assistance, and;
  • discuss the relative strengths and weaknesses of PebblePad, compared with existing learning and teaching tools.

Description

This workshop demonstrates using web conferencing for discussions, lectures and tutorials. You will learn how to use audio, text chat and web camera functions. We introduce the basic tools such as operating the whiteboard, loading PowerPoint presentations, taking web tours, and sharing documents using application sharing. Opportunities for hands-on experience with a range of these tools will be offered throughout the workshop.

During the workshop the step-by-step process of how to use these features will be recorded, including our discussions. This recording will be emailed to you to assist your practice and implementation of web conferencing.

Description

In this workshop we demonstrate some features that will help staff increase student interaction using web conferencing.
This is a practical workshop. Each participant will have the opportunity to use the following tools:

  • the whiteboard (including uploading PowerPoint and image files);
  • conducting polls and basic quizzes;
  • initiating and managing breakout rooms for small group discussions;
  • sharing applications (such as Excel documents, or Websites); and
  • incorporating multimedia elements and other files into your session.

Description

This workshop is designed to offer staff an insight into resources available to them in assisting their teaching role in the area of academic integrity.

The workshop illustrates a number of tools and strategies as well as a detailed look at the Turnitin software application and how it can be used as an educative tool rather than a discipline strategy.
The session is conducted in a relaxed atmosphere with participants invited to bring to the session, specific questions or issues that the presenters may be able to assist them with.

No prior technological knowledge is assumed – however – some familiarity with a computer would be advantageous.

ELT501/Semester 1 – Foundation of University Learning and Teaching

Description

This unit is designed to provide information and a collegial environment to support you in developing a rich and integrated understanding of university learning and teaching issues, with reference to the UTAS context.

You will explore the theories, principles and practice of university learning and teaching. There is an emphasis on discussing and applying constructive alignment, strategies for promoting deep learning and integrating technology into the learning and teaching environment.
This is the foundation unit in the Graduate Certificate of University Learning and Teaching, and consequently introduces a range of topics that will be developed further in other units. It also acts as a primer for new UTAS staff.

ELT504/Semester 1  - University Learning and Teaching Development Project

Launceston   February 20th

Description

This unit provides participants with the opportunity to demonstrate leadership through undertaking a supervised project on a strategic learning and teaching priority.  Drawing on knowledge developed in previous units of the Graduate Certificate, participants are required to plan, implement, evaluate and disseminate the outcomes of their project. The mode of delivery is one face to face day on Monday 20th February (in Launceston) with subsequent meetings with the unit coordinator as individually negotiated. ELT 501 and ELT502 or CAM502 and CAM506 are prerequisites for this unit.
